The greater Phoenix area was originally inhabited by the Hohokum people, whose innovative irrigation systems enabled them to create the first major urban civilization in the Salt River Valley. The art and innovations of the Hohokum and other native peoples are prominent in the city’s design and museums, and in 1868, the area was named “Phoenix '' as the new city rose from the ruins of the former civilization.

Now called the “Valley of the Sun'', Phoenix is a mecca for retirees, golfers, tech professionals, Millennials, and young families looking for a more laid-back lifestyle, world-class golf courses, a growing job market, and great schools. In fact, with all of its amazing amenities and affordable homes, Phoenix attracted more new residents than any other city in the U.S. from 2016 to 2019.

The Community

Phoenix is the only state capital with a population of more than one million residents, with over 1.66 million people. Cosmopolitan city life offers an incredible array of activities, state-of-the-art entertainment, a wide range of housing options, fantastic restaurants, and more sunny days than any other metropolitan city in America - all at a cost of living 5% lower than the national average.

From golfers on the area’s 200 courses to families playing in its beautiful city parks, nighttime concerts to its plethora of hiking trails with stunning desert views, Phoenix offers great living for people of all ages. For those commuting to work, visiting the Arts District, or going to see live theater downtown, bicycle lanes, and light rail give Phoenix lighter traffic than most major American cities.

The Culture

While the Phoenix Open comes to town once a year, it’s always golf season in Phoenix. With its warm weather, there are also year-round hiking opportunities, family-friendly activities, and of course, world-class spa treatments to be enjoyed.

The city’s four professional sports teams draw enthusiastic fans, and its incredible museums and art galleries bring beauty and joy to visitors. Shoppers will find everything they need in the city’s boutique stores and shopping malls, and area waterparks and nearby lakes and rivers offer fun opportunities to cool down in the summer.

Right in the heart of Phoenix is the massive Papago Park where you can stroll through different habitats in the Desert Botanical Garden, feed the giraffes at the Phoenix Zoo, and see the famed “Hole-in-the-Rock” formation. Shorts in the “winter” is a great way to describe the culture of Arizona’s capital city.

Lifestyle

Though the daily vibe is laid-back, there are endless options for Phoenix residents to have fun, explore the region, and eat great food! Have a delicious Southwestern breakfast at Ajo Al’s, high tea at the carefully preserved Wrigley Mansion, and American fare at Bobby Q’s or Stockyard Steakhouse.

To burn it off, there are hiking trails to fit every preference, from easy walks in Papago or South Mountain Park to the more challenging trails on Camelback Mountain.

Kids will love the interactive exhibits at the Arizona Science Center and the Children’s Museum, and adults will find bliss at the area’s phenomenal spas, from the Mediterranean feel at Alvadora Spa to a wellness retreat and beautiful views at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain.

When it gets hot, go for a leisurely kayak or inner tube trip down the Salt River, or head out on a day trip to Sedona or the Grand Canyon. There is so much fun to be had and beauty to be seen in Phoenix.
