On the border of Arizona and California lies the desert oasis of Lake Havasu City, at the edge of the lake formed by the winding Colorado River. Its sunny beaches, hot weather, and clear waters have drawn outdoor sports enthusiasts and retirees since the city’s founding in the 1960’s.

Folks come to Havasu from all over the state and the country to spend time on the lake waterskiing, jet skiing, fishing, or just relaxing on their boats. The town’s central landmark is the London Bridge that connects the mainland and the island, and actually once spanned the River Thames.

The Hualapai Mountains provide a spectacular backdrop to the city and are a home to deer and elk that can be seen from its campsites and hiking trails. Lake Havasu City is a great place for water enthusiasts who love the desert heat. It gets up to 120 degrees here in the summer!

The Culture

Havasu’s culture is centered around boating and water sports, but there are other incredible features to enjoy as well. The Havasu National Wildlife Refuge covers 37,515 along the lower Colorado River and boasts over 300 species of birds as well as areas for hiking and fishing. Grace Arts Live community theater offers live performances of shows like The Wizard of Oz and Guys & Dolls.

There are many unique, local bars and restaurants in town, two movie theaters, and a beachfront resort with restaurants, bars, and courtesy docks so boaters can stop by for a meal or a drink. At the Lake Havasu Museum of History, you can learn about the Native Americans who originally inhabited the land as well as the steamboats that used to navigate the river.

Every January, the Havasu Hot Air Balloon Festival hosts a huge fair with a daily mass ascension of balloons, a carnival, and live entertainment. Every day in Havasu offers multiple opportunities to have a great time.

Lifestyle

Take advantage of the early morning cool to explore the desert on ATVs or hike the slot canyon natural rock formations at Sara Park. Have breakfast on the patio at Makai Cafe overlooking the London Bridge, or start your day with benedicts and bloody marys on the pet-friendly patio at The Red Onion.

Take your boat out (or rent one!) to do some waterskiing, wakeboarding, or parasailing, or stay close to shore and practice your paddleboarding skills in the warm sunshine. North of the bridge at Lake Havasu State Park, go on a family kayaking excursion, watch the sunset, and spend the night camping under the stars.

On especially hot days, take advantage of the drive-through to pick up a refreshing iced coffee at The Human Bean without leaving the comfort of your car’s A/C. “Feed your inner bear” any time of day with all-American food at the Black Bear Diner, enjoy old-school Italian at La Vita Dolce, or celebrate an anniversary with steak and ribs at ChaBones.

On Saturday night, see a show at Grace Arts Live performing arts theater, or take the family to the Grand Canyon for the weekend - it’s only 3 hours away!
