Situated just 15 minutes northeast of the Phoenix city limits, the upscale, master-planned community of Carefree was incorporated in 1984 to preserve its independence from growing neighboring cities. The town’s original inhabitants include radio broadcaster Paul Harvey, and Arizona State Route 74, locally known as the “Carefree Highway”, inspired the famous song by Gordon Lightfoot.

Sitting at an elevation of 2,400 feet, temperatures in Carefree are typically 5 to 7 degrees cooler than towns to the south, and it even gets a slight dusting of snow in the “winter”. Carefree’s chill, relaxed vibe, amazing restaurants, shopping, and spacious housing earned it the name “the best small town in Arizona.”

The Community

Offering peace and serenity, a population of only 3800, and fantastic schools, Carefree is a wonderful place to retire or to raise a family. The area has higher housing costs, yet offers clean air, less traffic, and a crime rate 76% lower than the national average. The median age is 65.5, and The Boulders Resort and Spa offers not only a phenomenal course and relaxing spa treatments, but beautiful homes where you can live the good life on this incredible property.

As the long-time home of Southwestern Studios (where The New Dick Van Dyke Show and Bob Hope’s last movie were filmed), many celebrities have even sought out private, tranquil living in Carefree’s small-town setting that still provides easy access to the amenities of Phoenix and Scottsdale.

The Culture

Upscale shopping, rooftop patios, botanical gardens, and art galleries create a serene culture deserving of the name “Carefree”. The town is anchored by the plaza surrounding America’s largest sundial, where visitors can enjoy art galleries, delicious restaurants, and local boutique shops.

Outdoor activities are close at hand with Black Mountain on the western edge of town, Tonto National Forest to the east, and swimming, fishing, and watersports just 30 minutes away at Bartlett Lake. There is even an English tea room and a cigar lounge in town, and nearby churches and nonprofits provide places of worship and opportunities to do volunteer work for the community.

Lifestyle

On Friday mornings year-round, browse the Farmers’ Market in Sundial plaza for local produce and crafts. Enjoy breakfast at the Sundial Garden Café followed by a leisurely walk through the gorgeous botanical landscapes at Carefree Desert Gardens.

Literally shop on Easy Street in Spanish Villages’ art galleries, jewelry stores, and shop, and take your family or friends to dinner on the incredibly popular rooftop patio at Keeler’s Neighborhood Steakhouse. If you enjoy the arts, leisure, serenity, and lots of elbow room, Carefree’s lifestyle will delight you.
