While most of us imagine all of the elite living in Bel Air and the Hollywood Hills, on the other side of Hollywood lies Los Feliz, a highly coveted neighborhood for celebrities and industry creatives.

Los Feliz has deep roots in the entertainment industry. In fact, the original Disney studios, where Mickey Mouse and Snow White came to life, were located here. Prospect Studios, where Barney Miller, The Dating Game, and Welcome Back, Kotter were filmed, is still in Los Feliz and now home to Grey’s Anatomy and General Hospital.

This relaxed, hillside enclave on the southern slopes of Griffith Park is bursting with incredible cafes, restaurants, vintage shops, a vintage movie theatre, old LA architecture (like the DeMille estate, now owned by Angelina Jolie), and all the yoga and pilates classes you could possibly take.

With its Mediterranean climate, industry connections, and easy access to surrounding neighborhoods and Griffith Park, and you can have a production meeting in the morning and go for a horseback ride in the afternoon. Los Feliz has it all.

The Community

Los Feliz is a community of hipsters, celebrities, and musicians, and the artistic vibe can be felt in its street art, murals, indie bookstores, and community theater. This cozy hamlet of fewer than 33,000 people is only 2.6 square miles in area and has no tall buildings, making it feel like an artist’s refuge.

Families love Los Feliz for its exceptional schools, like Franklin Ave. Elementary, Lycée International French American school, or John Marshall High School (Leonardo DiCaprio’s alma mater), which you’ll recognize from movies like Grease and Pretty in Pink.

The community is very walkable, especially the family-owned shops and cafes of Los Feliz Village along Hillhurst and Vermont avenues. You’ll see a lot of people out running, walking their dogs, pushing strollers, and staying fit on the residential streets as well as the hiking trails of Griffith Park.

Exclusive areas like Laughlin Park and Los Feliz Estates are home to celebrities like Dan Levy, Zac Efron, Kristen Bell & Dax Shepard, and John Hamm.

The Culture

Morning hikes in Griffith Park, relaxed meetings in cafes, vintage shopping, and dinners in renowned restaurants shape the culture of Los Feliz. Everything you need is within its boundaries - organic grocery stores like Gelson’s, great schools, tennis courts, a golf course, the Fern Dell Nature Trail with its lush foliage, book signings and author events at Skylight Books, and a 1923 movie theatre showing new releases.

On any given day you can find a treasure at a vintage shop, stop by Jeni’s Ice Cream, or go stargazing at the Griffith Observatory. Bordering Silverlake, Atwater Village, Little Armenia, Thai Town and Hollywood, the area is more diverse than Beverly Hills and Bel Air.

Los Feliz is home to AAPI businesses like Obet and Del’s, where you can enjoy a Filipino iced coffee with ube, Spitz restaurant & bar featuring Turkish street food, and Mi Corazon organic Mexican.

The Hollywood Sikh Gurudwara is located in Los Feliz, providing opportunities to volunteer or enjoy a homemade vegan meal. Many of your neighbors, including local celebrities, lend their time at the Angel Harvest Food Distribution Center in Los Feliz to help those in need.

Lifestyle

Take a morning walk on the Fern Dell trail, then reward yourself with a latte and a homemade scone or the famous chickpea salad sandwich at The Trails café. Hit the links at the Roosevelt Golf Course or get in a game of tennis at the Vermont Canyon Courts, then head to brunch with cocktails on the patio at Alcove or Home Restaurant, where you’ll overhear a conversation about someone’s next screenplay.

Browse the vintage shops on Vermont Avenue for unique home décor, designer clothing, and gifts, then take in a matinee of a new movie at the Los Feliz Theatre.

Stop by Atrium for a happy hour of oysters and inventive cocktails on its stunning, soaring, courtyard surrounding a huge live tree. Next door at Skylight Books, browse the selection or take in a book reading and signing by a local writer or world-famous author.

Neighborhood dinner options include old-world Italian at Little Dom’s, vegan Thai at Green Leaves, sushi, and sake at Yen, or steak and calamari at The Dresden, featured in movies like Swingers for its Old Hollywood round tables and plush banquettes. For a fun night out, check out the vast selection of tropical drinks at the very popular Tiki-Ti Cocktail Lounge, or have a glass of wine at the more intimate Covell, which even has a Speakeasy for private parties! Who knows who you’ll run into…
