This mid-sized city, and Stanislaus County Seat, inspired the classic film “American Graffiti” by George Lucas, who grew up on a Modesto walnut farm (there’s even a statue of him in town!) Located in California’s Central Valley, which is renowned for its agricultural history and production, Modesto helped earn the county a whopping $3.6 billion in gross farm income last year. Big companies like Blue Diamond, E&J Gallo Winery, and Del Monte Foods are among the area’s largest employers. Its 220,000 residents give Modesto a dense suburban feel, and reinvestment in the downtown area has revitalized restaurants, shopping centers, cafes, art galleries, movie theaters, and live performance venues. Warm summers, mild winters, a love for the arts and good schools make Modesto a comfortable place to call home.

The Community

A socioeconomically and ethnically diverse city, Modesto is comprised of families who have lived there for decades alongside newly transplanted Bay Area folks seeking more affordable housing. The median age of its residents is 35.6, leaning younger than the national average, making it a great place for families and young professionals. Modesto has good public schools and is close to Cal State Stanislaus in the neighboring city of Turlock. Many people also come here to work in the agricultural industry, and many of the local farms, such as Dutch Hollow, provide fun activities for families like pumpkin picking in the fall, tulips in the spring, petting zoos, and craft fairs. Modesto residents also support their local growers at the Certified Farmers Market downtown on Thursdays and Saturdays where friendly neighbors say hello over bunches of organic cilantro.

The Culture

A fun annual event that shapes Modesto’s culture is the American Graffiti Festival (locally known as “Graffiti Summer”), celebrated every June with 1950’s music, roller-skating carhops, and a “cruise parade” of classic cars, drawing tens of thousands of spectators. All year round, restaurants specializing in Afghan, Greek, Middle Eastern, Indian, and Thai cuisine make it a great home for foodies, and coffee shops range from chains like Starbucks and Dutch Bros. to craft cafes like Caffettino and Preservation Coffee & Tea. The Arts are a central focus of life in Modesto, with the Stanislaus Arts Council, Gallo Center for the Arts, the State Theatre and the Modesto Art Academy all located downtown among a wide range of galleries. A huge regional shopping mall, beautiful parks and playgrounds, three golf courses, and nearby vineyards provide indoor and outdoor activities for residents of all ages and interests. For adventures out of town, weekends in the San Francisco Bay Area and camping trips to Yosemite National Park are just two hours away.
